Originally known as Chandra Drona Parvatha, the Western Ghats hill range in Chikmagalur of Karnataka is now known after the 17th-century Sufi saint Baba Budan. This range is in the shape of a crescent moon and includes the highest peaks of Karnataka – Mullayanagiri, and Bababudangiri.
The best time of the year to visit Chikmagalur district in general and especially the hills is during winter (October – February). The weather during this period is cold and refreshing.
Bababudangiri hill is a must visit destination for those who go to Chikmagalur. Located at a distance of 30 km from Chikmagalur town, the place is a popular waterfalls chikmagalur spot for adventure lovers especially trekking.
Mullayanagiri, the highest peak (1931m) between Nilgiris and Himalayas is the ultimate destination for trekking lovers in Chikmagalur. It offers panoramic views and very challenging trails (including ridge hiking). It can also be reached on wheels.
The Bababudangiri hill is famous for the shrine of Sufi saint Hazrat Dada Hayat Khalandar, a pilgrimage site for both Muslims and Hindus. Apart from personal transport, you have to depend on the infrequent public /private buses, which are the only options to reach the dargah.
Another favorite is Kemmangundi (1434m), surrounded by lush-green vegetation, beautifully laid-out ornamental gardens and plantations, mountains, waterfalls, streams. There is ample choice of routes and peaks for trekking.
An ideal trekking trip to these hills can be this way. Travel overnight from Bangalore (240 km) to reach Chikmagalur town by early morning. After freshening up and having breakfast you can start off on your adventure.
Start the trek from Sarpadhari (15 km from Chikmagalur) onto the ghat-road that leads to the Mullayanagiri peak. A steep (up to 60 degrees) stretch that passes through brush and low and onto the rocky hillside with a ravine on the right. After 3-4 hrs you can reach the Mullayanagiri peak by mid-morning. You can also go up to the Shiva temple by vehicle.
